Half of maritime incidents in 2022 occurred in ports and terminals

In this episode we discuss an alarming statistic from the maritime industry. According to a report by RightShip, an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)-focused digital maritime platform, half of the maritime incidents recorded in 2022 occurred in ports and terminals. This data was collected from various sources, including PSC, MOUs, classification societies, flag states, shipowner and managers self-reporting. The report states that 2,400 incidents were recorded in 2022 where the location was recorded. 

In this episode Yucel Yildiz, RightShip’s Port and Terminal Manager, sheds further light on this statistic and and emphasizes the need for harbour masters and operations teams to be prepared to deal with issues as they occur.

Yucel Yildiz

Yucel Yildiz is RightShip’s Ports and Terminals Manager. He joined the company in 2018 as a Vetting Superintended and carried out a secondment role as Customer Engagement Officer (EMEA) in 2020 and 2021. Yucel is part of the RightPORT task force and represents RightShip in various Port and Terminal Associations, including Dry Bulk Terminals Group (DBTG), the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), Association of Bulk Terminal Operators (ABTO). 

Yucel has extensive experience on ocean-going vessels, rising to the rank of master mariner on board crude oil, product, and chemical tankers. Before joining RightShip, he worked at a refinery terminal as a loading master and then as a vetting inspector, along with Maritime Pilots.  

Yucel has an MSc in Maritime Security, Safety and Environmental Management, and a BSc in Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering. He is currently working towards a Ports Management qualification.
